Mirrors aren't limited to only checking who is the fairest of them all. They can also be used to visually expand rooms, increase light and add beauty. Here are four ways you might use mirrors to spruce up your home's decor.
Installing floor-to-ceiling mirrors along the entire length of a wall won't actually make the room any bigger than it is. The mirrors will make the room appear to be larger, though. They'll give the illusion that there is much more space – that the room is twice as big as it actually is.
Lining a wall with full-length mirrors is a good way to visually expand rooms where people gather. Putting mirrors up in a dining room, living room or family room will make it seem like there's more space even when the room is full of people.
When placed near a window or skylight, mirrors will reflect the light that comes – thus maximizing the amount of light provided by the window or skylight. With a well-placed mirror, the effect will be noticeable and the room significantly brightened when the light hits the mirror. Placing a mirror near a window or a skylight, however, does require some consideration.
First, you'll want to make sure the mirror reflects the light that comes in during the time of day when a room's being used. For example, there's little reason to place a mirror so it reflects light from the sunset in a breakfast room. Think about when a room is used and where the sun shines in during that time of day. Where the sunlight hits is where a mirror should go.
Second, you don't want to reflect direct sunlight onto a seat, plant or artwork. A seat may become uncomfortably hot, and direct sunlight will fade the fabric. The sun's direct rays may also kill certain plants and damage artwork. Brighten a room while diffusing the sun's direct light by:
• Tinting the window or skylight that the sun shines in through
• Angling a mirror so the light it reflects goes into a corner nothing is in
• Using a frosted mirror to bounce some, but not all, light that hits it
With some creativity, you'll be able to find a solution that effectively brightens a room while it's being used without creating any hot spots within the room.
Similarly, a mirror may be placed behind a lamp or candle to increase artificial light given off by the lamp or candle. When putting a mirror behind a lamp or candle, don't worry about creating hot spots because they aren't as bright as sunlight. Just choose an elegant-looking mirror, and you'll add ambiance to the room while increasing how much a room is brightened by the light.
Some mirrors are as much a piece of artwork as they are a traditional mirror. Creative mirrors that have unique shapes or borders can be incorporated almost anywhere in your home as a piece of artwork. When this is done, the mirror itself essentially becomes an artistic medium that's uncommon but can look great.
What type of mirror will work well as a piece of artwork depends on the space it's being placed in. The right mirror will:
• Be well-sized for the space it's placed in
• Have a distinctive border that complements the surrounding decor
• Often have a unique shape that makes the mirror different from other mirrors
In short, a mirror that's being used as a piece of art needs to be individually selected for the room – just as any other piece of artwork would have to be.
