How to Correctly Clean Your Windows
Cleaning a window is both an art and a science, and you need to use proper tools as well as sound technique to do the job well. If your windows could use a good clean, use the following list of tools and guide to clean all your windows the right way.
What You Will Need
- Window washer - The first line of attack on a dirty window is the window washer. This tool needs a washable microfiber-lined pad that slips onto a T-bar and can be easily removed whenever necessary for laundering.
- T-bar - This is a handle that holds the window washer and provides its rigidity.
- Squeegee with blade - A squeegee is for clearing a window of cleaning solution and is equipped with a rubber blade that can be removed for replacement or cleaning.
- Microfiber towel - A microfiber towel is another essential for window washing and is useful for wiping the squeegee blade after each use. Razor blade scraper - A razor blade scraper is a simple, effective, way to rid the glass of stubborn particles. Scrapers are merely razor blades that fit into a protective handle for ease-of-use and safety.
- Cleaning solution - These solutions are mixed with water, directly applied to the glass with a window washer, then wiped away with a squeegee.
- Bucket - You will need a clean bucket that doesn't contain any foreign substances that might adhere to your window washer or glass. Extension pole - This telescoping device enables you to reach higher windows where ladders might be otherwise necessary.
How to Properly Wash a Window
1. Mix the Cleaning Solution
Begin by mixing the cleaning solution and water in a clean bucket; be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions for best results. If the solution becomes dirty, then throw out the remaining liquid, then rinse and refill your bucket with new solution and water.
2. Soak the Window with Cleaning Solution
After mixing the cleaning solution, dip the window washer into the bucket and allow it to soak up the solution for a few seconds. Next, lift the window washer from the bucket, giving it a slight shake downward to remove excess solution, then place the washer on the window.
Move the window washer around on the glass, applying firm, but gentle, pressure as you scrub. Be sure to penetrate the corners of the glass to prevent leaving dirty spots that will draw attention to themselves. Don't spend too much time washing, as a couple of passes will be sufficient.
3. Scrape off Stuck-on Debris
If you notice any stuck-on debris, such as paint, tar or tree sap, remaining on the window after using the washer, use the razor scraper to loosen it from the surface from the glass. Be careful not to nick the sash frame when using the scraper and always keep the angle of the blade low relative to the glass surface.
4. Remove the Washing Solution
The last step is to hold the squeegee blade vertically, then place the top end of the blade into the upper left-hand corner where the glass and frame meet. Next, draw the blade across the glass, which will pull the cleaning solution away from the glass where you wiped.
After the initial swipe sideways, wipe the rubber blade with a microfiber cloth to dry it. Finally, make as many vertical, downward sweeps necessary with the squeegee to pull the remaining solution off the window.
