Even though the square footage of your home may be small, you don’t have to give in and live with a cramped look. With a few décor tricks, you can take an undersized space and make it look larger.
From the color on your walls to the furniture you choose, you have multiple options for transforming your not-so-sizable rooms into ones that seem at least somewhat spacious. Along with using light paint to give your rooms an airy feel, you can add something else to your walls that will also make your home appear larger than it is: mirrors.
If you have small rooms, take a look at how you can use custom mirrors to make your home look larger than it is.
Turning an entire wall into a mirrored space will open the room up, appearing to almost double the size of the room. Even though you haven't changed the square footage, the reflection of the rest of the room in the mirrored wall will give it more depth. This tricks the eye into thinking that you have a much larger room than you really do.
If you don't want to cover an entire wall with a continuous floor to ceiling mirror, you have other options. You can also combine different custom mirrors on one wall, covering it as much as possible to provide a similar look. By placing multiple mirrors together on the same wall, you're designing a space that has visual interest while managing to make the room look larger than it is.
Let the light in and add to your space. By placing a mirror directly across from a window, you're creating the illusion of an additional window. This increases the amount of natural light that's coming into the room and can open up the area.
To use this trick, you need a mirror that will capture the window's entire reflection. A tiny mirror that's across from a larger window won't work. The mirror will only catch a partial reflection, giving you a fraction of the light and the look you are trying to achieve.
Along with choosing the right size of mirror, you also need to keep the window uncovered. If you close it off with heavy drapes or keep the blinds shut, the mirror won’t be able to work its magic.
Even though you don't want to pack furniture tightly into your small space, the appearance of extra pieces may make the room look larger. The more furniture you have in the room, the less area there is left to move around. No one wants to walk through a furniture maze.
But if you add the optical illusion of more furniture, you can make the room appear more spacious while still keeping it free and open. To accomplish this effect you'll need to add mirrors behind key pieces of furniture. This might mean placing a wide mirror across from a long table or a tall mirror behind a high-backed armchair.
Reflecting the natural light from a window isn't the only way to make a room seem roomier. Artificial light from your light fixtures can also help to spread out the space. Position a few custom mirrors across from table lamps or stand-up lights. As the light bounces off the mirror, the reflection will create the look of a larger space.
